Boxing Workout

Boxing Workout

For over a century boxers have been recognized as some of the best-conditioned athletes in the world. A boxing workout is a high intensity full body workout. With popular movies like Rocky and Million Dollar Baby, normal people have been exposed to the benefits of boxing training. In just about every commercial gym in America has some kind of cardio boxing or kickboxing program.

Love him or hate him, Mike Tyson took the boxing and sports world by storm at the tender age of 19. Before all of his legal trouble and public outburst, Iron Mike was respected and feared by all of his opponents. What made Mike Tyson different from others fighters was his will to win and his will to prepare for the big fight. Here is a workout routine that Mike used for some of his early fights.

Daily regime (7 days a week)4:30 am – 5am3 mile run

6 am: Take a shower and go back to bed

10am: Wake up and eat oatmeal

12pm: 10 rounds of sparing Slip bag-10 minSpeed bag-10 minFocus pads-10 minHeavy bag-10 min

2pm: Eat another meal (steak and pasta with fruit juice)

3pm: More ring work 60 minutes on the exercise bike

5pm: 10 circuits of 200 sit-ups, 50 dips, 50 push-ups, and 50 shoulder shrugs 10 min of neck work 10 min of jump rope

7pm: steak and pasta meal

8pm: 30 minutes on the exercise bike then watch TV and go to bed.

Now obviously this workout is as extreme as Mike Tyson and its way to advance for beginners. When starting a boxing fitness workout you should look for a coach who has proper teaching credentials. No matter what level you are at, boxing training should always include traditional boxing exercises like jump rope, shadowboxing, heavy bag work, and speed bag training.

Here are several benefits of a boxing workout:

  • Burn 500-1000 cal in an hour
  • Improve strength
  • Increase balance
  • Weight loss
  • Self defense

Boxing training programs are different from each gym. So coaches will focus on certain aspects but all in all boxing is boxing and the workouts are effective in their own way. In Million Dollar Baby Hilary Swank showed us all how boxing training could build and shape a woman’s body to look strong but still sexy. For the film Hilary incorporated new training techniques along with a strict diet that consisted of egg whites with flax oil and vitamins and minerals. Lunch and dinner consisted of fish and lots of green vegetables and for a late night snack she would drink a special protein shake. If you are looking to loose weight or just spice up your fitness routine, try some boxing and see what this wonderful combat sport can do for you.
