Strikeforce – Bringing MMA and Kickboxing to the Forefront
Even avid sports enthusiasts may not be as interested in MMA or kickboxing. A few may not have even heard of “MMA.” Fortunately, Strikeforce is changing perceptions for both parties. Headed by Scott Coker, this organization is a premier venue for MMA or kickboxing competitions. Men and women alike test brawn and brain through these matches. In the process, the general American public gets an opportunity to develop respect for sports that received little recognition in the past.
So, what can a spectator expect if they decide to watch a Strikeforce match? Well, first off, every competition embodies the heart of MMA. Competitors employ a range of fighting styles, usually from the martial arts or contact sport genres. Kickboxing is included in this mix, as it is no longer showcased exclusively. In addition, the organization treats men and women equally. The female matches generate the same type of adrenalin rush as the male one.
In terms of the matches themselves, a typical Strikeforce competition is usually 5 minutes long. There are three or five rounds, depending on the type of match being played. Generally, a title match will have more rounds, while a non-title match will have fewer. And in both cases, there is a 60-second intermission for both spectators and contestants. This gives all parties an opportunity to recover from the excitement of the match, even if it’s for a brief second!
When a Strikeforce match is in session, contenders must follow a set of rules. Defined by the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, these rules maintain the integrity of the sport while lessening the chance of serious or fatal injury. One of the more interesting rules states that contenders cannot throw in the towel just because a competition seems too challenging. They must fight until their body gives in. If this happens and they want to admit verbal defeat, they are allowed to. In this situation, the winner is determined by “submission.” Conversely, if a contender refuses to verbally acknowledge defeat, yet their body cannot physically go on, a winner is determined by “Technical Knockout.” Matches that end with a TKO offer a more intense experience for spectators. They sit on the edge of their seats wondering if their favorite competitor will be able to rise from their knock-down.
Boxing and other contact sports can arouse similar feelings, but they still don’t compare to MMA. With MMA you get diversity, which contributes to the emotions of the match. With other sports, it’s always the same routine in terms of fighting style. Perhaps this is why more and more sports enthusiasts would rather see an MMA competition over a boxing match.
