Do you have insomnia?

Tips for Tackling Insomnia

Insomnia is defined as a difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep. This may be due to an inadequate amount of sleep or poor quality of sleep. It is not measured by the number of hours a person sleeps simply because the amounts of sleep required varies greatly by individual. Symptoms that last less than a week are considered ‘transient insomnia.’ Individuals with symptoms between one and three weeks experience ‘short-term insomnia’ and those who suffer longer than three weeks are considered to have ‘chronic insomnia.’

Here are some suggestions for combating all three types of insomnia:

  • Take a warm bath before bed. Mix a cup of Epsom salts and a cup of baking soda in with warm water to help you relax and remove toxins from your body. Just be careful not to stay in to long. Hot water drains the vitality from your body if you soak for an extended period of time.

  • Drink an herbal tea. I-Supplements.com carries a diverse line of herbal teas. Try the Triple Leaf Relaxing Tea to help you sleep. It is a very potent blend of nervine herbs that promotes healthy relaxation and restful sleep. This delicious caffeine-free herbal tea includes valerian, passionflower, skullcap, chamomile and catnip and helps relax feelings of anxiety, stress and tension.

  • Get some exercise. Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical exercise in per day. This will provide your body with the activity and oxygen it needs so you can relax and sleep. Remember to stop physical activity at least one half hour before you plan to go to bed so your body has time to slow down and recover.

  • Get a massage. Ask your spouse or whomever you can get your hands on to get their hands on you. Even a short backrub can help work the tension out of your muscles and allow you to fall asleep more easily.

  • Get on a schedule. Set a bedtime for yourself and stick to it. Your body longs for routines when it comes to getting up, eating and going to bed. Even if you don’t feel tired, getting into the habit will retrain your body and help you get to sleep.

  • Have sex! Alone or with a partner, sex releases hormones that create a relaxed feeling of euphoria that may help you drift off to sleep.
